What airline from NYC to Nurburgring?

This year’s resolution is to finally get my passport......and get my ass to Nurburgring!

After a brief google search, it looks like the airport to fly to is Cologne Bonn Airport, which is about an hour drive to Nurburgring. Has anyone ever flown over there from NYC (JFK/Newark etc)? Is Lufthansa the way to go? How much was airfare? A quick look shows a week round trip in September is about $1500 w/ 1 layover at Munich. Another option seems like a direct flight to Frankfurt, and then drive about 2 hours, which looks to be almost half the price! Maybe go during the Frankfurt auto show in late september...

Any recommendations? What’s the best time to drive it? What’s the real cut-off for driving (in terms of getting too cold)?

I’d want to also drive a no limit section of the autobahn and check out some awesome plants and museums (like the Porsche one in Stuttgart, which is like a 3 hour drive from NR).

As you can tell, I really don’t know exactly when or what to do, so give me guidance!

Flying to Frankfurt would probably be the best option. Frankfurt is located relatively in the middle of Germany. The Mercedes Benz museum and the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart are highly recommendable. As well as the BMW World in Munich.

You don’t have any choice but to go at the Mercedes Museum and Porsche Museum! And look if there’s something to see at Spa Francorchamps too, it’s not very far

You definitely want Lufthansa if you can swing it. They codeshare with United so check fine print for the ‘operated by’ when you book.

Give yourself PLENTY of time when flying out of Newark. I develop a new reason to hate that garbage airport whenever I fly in & out of there.

Hmmm, like fly in to Frankfurt, drive to Nurburgring (2 hrs), sleep overnight. Day 1 at nurburgring. Day 2, drive back to Frankfurt and do auto show. Day 3 drive to Stuttgart (2 hours) and do Porsche Museum, Merc Museum other things for like 2 days. Day 5 drive to Munich (2 hours) and do BMW world. Fly out Day 6/7.

Is there any unlimited sectors of road in that itinerary?

I’m a travel novice, and don’t really fly that much. Thanks for the heads up!!

I’ve never flown international, so I have no idea how bad terminals A and B are!

Yes, there are still some decent unrestricted sections between Stuttgart and Munich. Just watch your speed on the ramps!

Anyway, going to Germany is better than not going to Germany, but you really need to spend more than 5 days! There’s so much to see, especially outside of the cities.

Wow, it’s only an hour and half away! I had no idea how close they were. I’d love to drive it, but I think that would be way to expensive compared to the relative cheapness of Nurburgring. It looks like a rental GT86 for 5 laps is like $400 USD. It looks like Spa is a minimum of $550 USD. Maybe another trip is in order!!

I could probably pull taking off a week from work...not more than that! I’d time it in a way where I fly out Friday night or Saturday, then fly back to arrive Sunday night to maximize time there. Hell, if I could, I’d spend a month there!!

Why do you want to rent a car at the track? Take your rental car from the airport on the track! Those 3 laps of the ring in a Peugeot 207 were the most fun I ever had on four wheels.

The jump from zero weeks to one week is a lot bigger than the jump from one to two ;)

Well, Munich is the farthest with 3 and a half hours from Frankfurt. But Stuttgart and the Nürburgring are about 1 1/2 hours away from Frankfurt. Like fourvalleys already mentioned, there are quite few sections without speed limits. But a lot of construction sites on some parts of the Autobahn sadly.

It is a possibility, but I thought that all rental agencies pretty much exclude the Nurburgring in their insurance? I also know that if you hit an Armco at NR, they send you a big bill. A rental track car would (should?) include some insurance, have proper brakes, possibly come with instruction and have the tickets all sorted already.

How much did the laps cost?

AHAH ooph that logic is infallible. Hard to not agree!

I didn’t ask myself that much questions back then, and I think the ring is technically a public road. At that time (2007) a lap cost about 15 Euros, but now I see it’s more like 29, or 105 Euros for four laps.

I don’t think any airline is actually landing on the ‘ring.

Look for Frankfurt instead.

On tonight’s episode of 1st gear, the stigs pilot cousin lands on Döttinger Höhe then does a 4 minute lap!

Cheap is king. Last summer my friends and I got really good prices flying from Oakland to Belgrade, and then from Amsterdam back to Oakland, with Norwegian—I think it was 550 one way and 650 the other, and we didn’t book that far in advance. I think they can make everything so cheap because all of their flights have a layover in Stockholm (on the way back it was 16 hours!) but if you don’t mind it then it’s a good way to save money.

Honestly, just go to Kayak or Cheap-o-Air (is legit) and sort by price.

Delta to Frankfurt. That is if you value your time. DL is the on time international leader across the Atlantic. Fly out of the nice new terminal in JFK, drop a couple if bucks and hang out on the Delta Sky Deck and have a beer before the flight. Yes, I am biased.

We went in November in the middle of the week and it was open for half a day. We bought the five lap pass. Let the eager beavers run first and head out about 20 min into the session. There are track prepped cars you can rent. Traditional Rental car companies frown on taking cars to the Ring, but we took our Z4 out.

We stayed at a hotel about 20 min south of the track. Family owned place, but nice. I wish I could remember the name.

I’ve done United/Lufthansa to Frankfurt. I believe tickets are cheaper flying into Frankfurt than Cologne (I could be wrong). When do you plan on going?

I was supposed to fly Denver to Frankfurt via Iceland (Iceland air can offer pretty cheap flights) and got bumped to a direct flight which was awesome.

The area between Frankfurt and the ‘Ring is really nice, Rein Valley, Mosel Valley, and your a short trip away from the Black Forest or Rothenburg. Basically you can’t go wrong, look up cool things in Germany and string them together you’ll have an awesome time.

It looks like Frankfurt is the way to go. I’m not sure about the timeframe, but I’m thinking late summer/early fall. Septemberish may work, I just want to make sure it’s a good time to go!!

I’d pop for lufthansa or air france. You don’t want to be on united for 14 hours each way.

Wouldn’t Flugplatz be a bit more appropriate?
